In the past month, Donald Trump has been accused of sexual assault by an ever-increasing number of women. At least a dozen at last count. Trump himself is on video, via Billy Bush and Access Hollywood, confessing to “grab[bing] them by the pussy.” The operative word being “them,” indicating more than one. Even if this was “locker room talk,” it’s a statement that indicates a necrotic, immoral character and a twisted sense of right and wrong simply to believe that sexually molesting women is something that’s brag-worthy.
Worse, Trump is on videotape propositioning underage girls. In one instance, a 10-year-old girl passed Trump at the base of an escalator. Trump can be overheard clearly telling the girl that he’d be dating her “in ten years.” In another case, Trump said the same to a 14-year-old girl, but narrowed the timeline before he’d “be dating her” to just a couple of years, putting the girl’s age for dating Trump at 16.
Even worse than all that, Trump is on video boasting about how he likes to go backstage during his Miss Teen USA pageants specifically in order to see the underage contestants, some as young as 14, either semi-naked or fully nude.
And finally, Trump is facing a civil trial in which he’s accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.
None of this can be repackaged as “youthful indiscretions.” Trump was 59 when the Access Hollywood episode was recorded for posterity.
Elsewhere, the seven militia members charged with the armed takeover of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon were acquitted last week. Ammon Bundy, Ryan Bundy, Ryan Waylen Payne, Brian Cavalier, Peter Santilli, Joseph Donald O’Shaughnessy and Shawna Cox seized and occupied the refuge and its visitors center for 41 days last year with the goal of permanently holding the land.
The militia members numbered in the dozens. They defaced ancient petroglyphs; they used firearms to intimidate law enforcement; they used earth-movers as barricades; and one occupant, LaVoy Finicum, was killed when he tried to run a police checkpoint while armed. There’s audio and video of the occupation and most of the suspects have confessed to what they did.
This was an treasonous armed insurrection against the sovereign powers of the government of the United States, which controls the land; maintaining and protecting it for the people. It’s entirely possible that the militants would still be there, had the leaders of the occupation not tried to mull around in public.
The notion of successfully mounting a secessionist rebellion against the federal government was always little more than a joke, with firepower. The odds of success were exactly zero. And those odds underscored, if not entirely defined, the childish delusions of the occupiers.
And then there’s Hillary Clinton.
On Friday, FBI Director James Comey sent a now infamous letter to House Republican leadership announcing that the bureau discovered that there are emails on a laptop agents seized in an investigation of Anthony Weiner’s alleged sexting of an underage girl. We don’t know if any of the emails belong to Hillary, we just know that Huma Abedin, Weiner’s estranged wife, is one of Hillary’s chief advisers and that she might’ve used the laptop to receive emails. Shocker, it’s a laptop. With emails on it.
That’s all we know.
And it might doom Hillary’s chances.
Trump is on record as having molested numerous women, while also ogling underage girls. He’s admitted to it. On video. Likewise, the Bundys and their secessionist co-conspirators seized and occupied government land for 41 days. Trump’s numbers are rapidly improving, while the Malheur militants were acquitted (the Bundy brothers remain in custody pending trial in Nevada for the armed Bundy Ranch standoff).
But Hillary and, subsequently, the world could be utterly screwed because of a letter that didn’t implicate her of anything in a case in which she’s already been exonerated by the FBI, as well as numerous Republican-led investigatory committees. Despite all that, if Trump wins the election, he’s pledged to imprison Hillary for crimes she never committed — at least according to all of the above investigations.
So, don’t tell me there’s not a double standard at work. Don’t tell me there’s not a completely unfair and unjust discrepancy here between the way Hillary is being condemned and the way these other real-life villains are being absolved if not lionized.
Don’t tell me the system is “rigged” in support of Hillary Clinton and against the wealthy white men.
